In 2018, Dr. Fuentes and his wife, Mrs. Bertha—a Cuban and Namibian couple—set out to invest in a guesthouse as part of their retirement vision. Their journey began with a hopeful trip from their hometown of Ongwediva to Swakopmund after spotting a potential property advertised in the newspaper. Unfortunately, upon arrival, they were informed that the house had been sold just hours earlier, and they returned home disappointed but not discouraged.
Determined to continue their search, the couple shifted their focus closer to home. Not long after the Swakopmund trip, they discovered a house in the residential area of Oshakati East that immediately felt right. Seeing its potential, the property was rezoned for business use and transformed into what is now known as Cubita Guesthouse & Tours—a name inspired by the couple’s deep connection to the Caribbean island of Cuba.
Cubita officially opened its doors on 5 July 2020. From the moment guests arrive, the ambience offers a sense of escape—less like a town setting and more like a coastal retreat. Pergolas draped in greenery, the presence of exotic birds, carefully selected music, and flavourful cuisine come together to create a unique fusion of cultures. Here, the warmth of local Oshiwambo Namibian heritage blends seamlessly with the vibrant Cuban spirit of Dr. Fuentes, offering guests an experience that is both welcoming and unforgettable.
